Meet The Band > Adie Smith

Musical Director

Adrian was born in Blackley, Manchester , in July 1985. Adrian began playing percussion aged seven whilst he accompanied his older brother to Music Service on a Friday night. Adrian played with his school band, Crosslee under the direction of the music teacher David White before the same teacher brought him down to the Blackley bandroom in 1995.

Adrian stayed with Blackley Band for eight years, spanning their most successful years by experiencing a trip to the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2000. This gave Adrian the bug for the big stage and two years after this Adrian moved on to the championship section to further himself as a player.

He joined the Wingates band in 2002 and from then moved onto a number of bands, including spells at Yorkshire Imps, Fairey’s, YBS and Timperley. He moved back to the Wingates band in 2008 and plays with them on a regular basis at most contests and various contests throughout the year. Unfortunately he is not able to give full commitment due to his dedication to conducting.

Adrian has always had an interest in conducting and since taking up his place at Salford University, studying BA(Hons) Music, his interest has blossomed. When the position of Musical Director became available at Blackley he jumped at the chance of applying for the post.

"I look forward to a long and successful era as MD of the band. As soon as the position became available I had no hesitation but to apply for the post at the band I started with."

Adrian was appointed Musical Director in April 2005 and since then he has enjoyed success, with an incredibly successful year in 2008/9 where the band won 2 local competitions and go promoted to the 3rd section locally, and also enjoyed good concert performances by the band.

Adrian views Blackley Band's continuation and progress as a job to be done with enthusiasm and vigour, already the band has several new players. So in conclusion Blackley Band will be commencing a series of concerts in the local area to re-introduce the band and its new members and MD to you all.
