Blackley Band at the Black Dyke Festival

A few of our members attended the Black Dyke Festival of Music in Leeds Town Hall on May 17th, it was our second year being involved and everyone that attended had the chance to have some tuition from Black Dyke’s talented musicians.

Richard Marshall led a cornet workshop while horns were looked after by Johnny Bates and lower brass by Gary Curtin and Ben Dixon with Chris Binns there to assist any trombone players that came along as well.

After an intensive morning of technique practice and tips of how to improve everything from range to dynamic contrast the day culminated in a massed bands event where members of Blackley Band shared the stage with Black Dyke as well as Yorkshire  Youth and a huge amount of players, as you’ll see from the pictures.

During the lower brass workshop Gary gathered all of the players in the main hall to perform Lux Arumque, a lovely piece arranged for a Euphonium and Bass quintet. Gary has now shared a recording of that performance and it can be seen on YouTube.
